From Humble Beginnings to Big Dreams: The Highway Education Foundation

Established in 2012, the Highway Education Foundation didn't emerge as a grand plan but rather as a response to a whispered need. Nestled within the small, economically challenged communities surrounding Highway Covenant Tabernacle Church, led by Pastor Sabelo T. Khumalo, the church found itself inundated with pleas – requests for assistance with school fees, a lifeline for children yearning for education's golden key.

Foundation's Inception and Mission:

The seed of the foundation was sown, nurturing the dreams of orphans and those facing financial hardship right from the start. It understood that education wasn't merely a right; it was a ladder out of poverty's grasp

Over the years, the foundation has stood by numerous young minds, offering support through initiatives like the "Buy-a-Shoe" campaign, initiated in 2012. This campaign has provided shoes for over 200 school children, ensuring their journey to the classroom is unimpeded by worn-out soles. Additionally, more than 60 students, both in secondary and tertiary institutions, have received scholarships, their academic aspirations fueled by the foundation's belief in their potential.

Community Engagement and Fundraising:

Initially reliant on the generosity of Highway Covenant Tabernacle members, the foundation's funding has expanded to include contributions from individuals and businesses outside the church. Since 2022, the annual Highway Half Marathon has evolved into a community cornerstone, raising funds and awareness for the foundation's cause. This year promises another exciting edition, coupled with a new initiative – a national high school quiz scheduled for August 2024.

Narratives of Impact:

Beyond the numbers, the foundation's impact is expressed through stories – tales of vulnerable children, their challenges, and their unwavering pursuit of knowledge. These narratives serve as beacons of hope, emphasizing that education is not merely a statistic but a fundamental human right worth advocating for. The foundation proudly celebrates its success stories, showcasing the empowered lives its support has nurtured.

Collective Action and Future Initiatives:

Although the Highway Education Foundation originated in a small community, its dreams are expansive. It stands as a testament to the power of collective action, driven by compassion and a profound belief in the transformative power of education. As it embarks on new initiatives and continues its storytelling mission, the foundation remains unwavering in its commitment – to empower vulnerable children, one step, one story, one dream at a time.
